ABOUT

WHO WE ARE

Oracle and Bone is an independent game studio founded in Vancouver, Canada. We strive to create original and heartfelt interactive stories.  We decided to form a game studio together because we share a passion for storytelling. We had participated in local zine festivals before and decided to challenge ourselves and make a game together. We both have a love for art and video games, and wanted to combine our interests in making a work that represents our values, ideas, and culture.

A SUMMER’S END - Hong Kong 1986

The game is a work of fiction, but it discusses the atmosphere of 1980s Hong Kong following the signing of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, local Hong Kong pop culture, as well as the shifts in cultural attitudes towards the societal role of women and LGBTQ issues. Individuality, self-determination and freedom of sexual expression is called to question as the player steps into Michelle’s shoes and experiences a burgeoning romance amidst the vibrant backdrop of 1980s Hong Kong. A Summer’s End is also a new media homage to Asian cinema and Hong Kong’s golden age of entertainment.

“Hong Kong is a place of particular importance to me as the writer for A Summer’s End. The city is my birthplace and a place where my family once called home for 3 generations. Although I have spent the majority of my life in Canada, Hong Kong culture had a particular influence on me growing up in Metro Vancouver. Vancouver is a Canadian city with a long history of Chinese immigration. Developments in Southern China have sparked waves of immigration over the last century. My family was one of many who decided to emigrate from Hong Kong in the early 1990s. The story has special significance to me in that it relates closely to my own coming out story and my relationship with my culture and family.”

“My memory in Hong Kong and how it has been a dearest memory for many years and also become one of the most significant inspirations to me. I had a chance to live in Hong Kong when I was young. At that time there were a lot of critical events that happened in my life and my family. I still remember every detail vividly. The skyline along the road across the ocean, the buzzing streets and colour signs along the street. The moment I looked at the city from above, even though we couldn’t see the stars in the night sky, the city lights and life were brilliant and beautiful as much. It was the first time I realised the true meaning of accepting myself for who I am and my own identity. Even though many years have passed now, whenever I am, this memory is still most cherished in my heart. I hope that I can share these feelings with everyone through A Summer’s End and our future projects.”
